Typography

Jeremy Pettis' animal inspired typography:

Cool little site where you just use your keyboard to trigger words from the Daft Punk song..

Also, the Litmus application which allows you to take screenshots of what your website/email will look like in other browsers. Not sure how useful it would be if you don't pay for it...

Puppets + Type

Coldplay's Life in Technicolour II Video.
It's something similar to what I wanted to do for my Beatles song concept.

Just a cool typography site Words are Pictures.

D.A.N.C.E.

All time favourite video:

American studio Stardust's 2008 Showreel, has a lot of cool motion graphics in it. It's someplace that I'd definately want to work at when I graduate.

This one especially ... i like the cut-out effect, which would be good for my Sgt. Pepper concept. I like the way it travels through the animation and how everything connects.

I like the use of repetition for long notes in the song and sharp cuts/zooms for drumbeats Futureheads video for "Decent Days and Nights"

"In Radiohead's new video for "House of Cards", no cameras or lights were used. Instead, 3D plotting technologies collected information about the shapes and relative distances of objects. The video was created entirely with visualizations of that data."

Animatic #3

It started by a jay jays shirt, of which i can hopefully find a photo. If not, there seems to be this type of ... 'lo-fi' 'vintage' style that im interested in. You can see in Jeffrey Bowman's work.

A more modern interpretation, well, something that i think relates is well is this idea of geometric graffiti by Sick Systems.

Also, this flickr set with what the photography terms is 'vintage' and lo-fi'

Simple.. vibrating circles... could be developed further in terms of synching it with audio

Animatic #2 - Cut-outs

Looking through my music, I was interested in using one of The Beatles songs. I cropped their song 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' to make it fit a minute and went researching a style that could work well with the music.

It started of with one of The Beatles videos:

Then the idea of stage, cut-outs, puppets, old black and white detailed drawings...
Red Interactive

and Cirque du Soleil

One of the more quirky and strange scenes from the movie Across the Universe:

Also thinking about traditional sources of inspiration like Alice in Wonderland, the Disney classic and even the Jan Svankmajer version (The scenes where she's being chased by the queen/chasing after the rabbit):

Interesting demo reel by Adam Amaral:

Animatic #1 - Typography

Typography is an area that I'd really like to explore, since we haven't really touched on it much in the last 2 years but for Vis Com students is a norm.

Gavin Strange Bristol-based designer has his own personal portfolio site Jam Factory said something in Issue 119 of Computer Arts Projects :

"I think typography is going to continue to be a strong element in the design world in the future, especially the art of making a spoken statement look beautiful. With the current social, economical and political climate everyone has an opinion, and with the aid of well crafted typography and info-graphics messages are going to be seen and heard."

Looking more into the typography explorations on youtube, I really like the Wedding Crashers

And Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels...

The Dexter tribute is a little different from the rest, where the series' theme of blood splatter is replicated with a kind of smoking misty/mysterious effect...

Week 1

I was looking at the Psypop studio website and the Dante's Inferno trailer was really impressive. I was going to use it as part of my post but its already on the Studio blog...

London agency TBWA (which stands for Tragos, Bonnange, Wiesendanger and Ajroldi: the founding partners) created this TV campaign for E.ON.. it's a quick ..less than a minute clip. But is just minimalist eye candy.

something quirky ... Folio of London-based designer Andy Martin...
What stands out for me though is his work for Nike...

I really like that detailed black and white effect.
Similar to this 2D still advert

... and his E4 Stings/ idents

PIXELBASED art? ...
there's lots of stuff out there, and things like habbohotel.com that use pixel art. Could be an interesting concept to followthrough.
http://www.wildemedia.co.uk/ has still shots of a pixel town called Dullsville.

From John Whitney's geometric responses to audio, it got me thinking about the connections to abstract art and using art/motion graphics as a response to something. Shapes --> splatter like Jackson Pollock...

Those moving shapes in Whitney's work played an integral role in the synchronisation of the whole thing but what do does shapes mean ... I could change them, use symbols? Look in to aboriginal art work... LACE? .. Renaissance clothing and fashions. Looking back to the ACMI exhibition in 2007. Lace is quite intricate and could be developed further.
